1-4:10Thai New Contemporary Bible (TNCV)

Money, Grace, and a Thai Sermon

Money, Grace, and a Thai Sermon

In Thai churches, there is a lot of misunderstanding about the nature and purpose of giving money to God.  Some people think that God requires 10% of their income and if they don't give it, they are sinning.  Even more common is the idea that if I give to God, He will bless me.  This transactional mentality is likely a holdover from the animism that is so prevalent in Thai folk Buddhism, where people make specific ritual offerings to spirits in order to get specific desired blessings.  But then again, human nature left to its own devices can also come up with the "give-to-get" approach to God.

The crass idea that you can get stuff from God by giving stuff to Him is further propagated by prosperity gospel teachers who urge people to give money to God (through their anointed ministries, of course) as a way to demonstrate that they have enough faith to receive their desired blessings.    The larger the amount of money, the more faith you have.  Or so they say.

“Why Am I Suffering?” A Christian Answer to a Buddhist Question

“Why Am I Suffering?” A Christian Answer to a Buddhist Question

“Why am I suffering?” and “How can I escape from suffering?” Those are the big questions that drive Buddhism.  The answer provided is that suffering is caused by desire, and one can escape suffering by detaching oneself from the world through right thinking, right speech, and right action.  It may sound fine in theory but in practice most Thai Buddhists find it very difficult.  Many Thai Buddhists will admit that they find it a great challenge to keep even the Five Precepts, the most basic moral rules of Buddhism.  Being a good person is really hard and even for the most moral of people, suffering still comes.  And when it comes, how should we make sense of it?  In our own lives? In the lives of others?  How can we have hope in the midst of suffering?  These are all important questions.  But for most people, satisfying answers are elusive.  Buddhism says, “Avoid suffering by trying to be good” or “Just suck it up because your suffering is caused by bad karma from a past life.”  As the prosperity gospel gains a hearing in Thai churches, quick-fix preachers promise people, “If you have enough faith and do the right things, then God will make you healthy and wealthy.”  Some are sucked in by these charlatans, but the promises of the prosperity gospel come up empty and in the end give people a warped and inaccurate impression of Christianity.

A Great Cloud of Witnesses (on CD)

Since Sun hasn't been feeling well because of the pregnancy, I've been taking care of Joshua more than usual so that she can rest but I run out of things to do with him and get completely exhausted. On the days that he decides to wake up at 5 am, it doesn't help matters. And, frankly, I can only build towers with blocks or watch him drag pillows around the house so much. Keeping him from getting permanent head damage from his climbing (and falling) expeditions also gets old after a while. I love the kid, but often times I would rather be doing some language study or sermon prep instead of watching him for hours on end. But, in any case, I decided to try to make the best use of time, so while I lie on the floor and try to prevent Joshua from hitting me with wooden blocks or plastic tubs, I also listen to sermon CDs. I don't always get through a whole CD before he needs a snack from the kitchen, or a piggyback ride, or the something else happens to take us out of his room, but I have been incredibly blessed by some of the good preaching I've been listening to while watching Joshua at home, and while driving around town with him doing errands. I was given a set of CDs from the Shepherd's Conference (MacArthur's pastor conference) and it is just excellent to hear some good solid Biblical expositional preaching and teaching. I've heard quite a bit of preaching here in Thailand and frankly, a lot of it is not that impressive. The church here seems to suffer from the same ailment as Western churches - sermons that don't really teach the Word of God but rather merely use a verse or short bible passage as

Mom's Memorial Service

Mom's Memorial Service
It has been about a month and a half since Karl's mom passed away on May 24th and her absence is profoundly felt. She was a wonderful woman and dearly missed. Our family is very thankful that God gave us some time with her after we arrived from Thailand on May 20th and praise Him for strengthening us for the chaotic and emotional time that we stepped into when we got off the plane.I had the unique privilege of leading the memorial service for my Mom and I am posting below the order of service from the church bulletin together with the MP3 audio files for the service. I am doing this both for my own sake and that of my family as we think back about my Mom in years to come, and also for the sake of those who loved and appreciated my Mom but were unable to make it to the memorial service. The six MP3 files, taken together,

Renewing My Mind: Justification

Since we're back in the States for a few months, I've been taking advantage of the much higher internet speed and abundance of good English language books that are available here. Filling my mind with not only Scripture but good solid Biblical books and sermons is always beneficial to me and is a benefit to our ministry at home and abroad. If I am continually thinking upon God, His revealed will, and the application of that in my life and in the church, then I will be build up in my walk in Christ and those whom I interact with will (hopefully) benefit as well. I wanted to post here the links to a series of four sermons on justification that a missionary colleague recommended to me. Justification is one of those core truths of the Christian faith that is necessary to review again and again. It is also a core truth of the Christian faith that is not talked about much these days or if it is, it is often simplified to "Jesus died for your sins." I found these sermons very helpful and hopefully some of you will as well.Edward Donnelly - Justification #1 - Its ImportanceEdward Donnelly - Justification #2 - Its Meaning and GroundEdward Donnelly - Justification #3 - Its Source and InstrumentEdward Donnelly - Justification #4 - Its Implications
