Caitlin Earns a Kindle

Caitlin Earns a Kindle

At 6 years old, Caitlin is growing as a reader, striving to catch up with her older brother.   As an incentive to keep pushing forward in reading, we told Caitlin she would get a special reward when she finished a series of graduated readers and a big book of Bible stories.  She pressed on and got the prize at last - her very own Kindle, with a snazzy pink case, at that.  Now she won't have to battle with her older brother for reading time on the Kindle :-)

Latin and Legos

Latin and Legos

As a reward for finishing all the lessons in his Latin book, Joshua got a (long-awaited) Lego prize.  I say learning Latin is a reward in itself but for Joshua, the hope of Legos sweetened the deal and kept up the motivational level.

Caitlin's Second Birthday Party

Here are some photos from Caitlin's second birthday party.  She has really begun to get interested in dolls, so "baby dolls" (as she called them) featured prominently among the gifts.  But she is also a big fan of fish (for some inexplicable reason), and thus Mommy got her a fish cake, which she continues to mention regularly, long after the event has passed.  Must have been a good cake!

Goodbye Chickens

For the past couple of years, our family has raised chickens as part of homeschooling for the kids.  We have all come to enjoy the chickens, despite the upkeep they require.  Joshua has written his own eBook about chicken raising and had been trying to train one of the chickens (whom he named "Champion").  Unfortunately, we recently had to give up our chickens after our neighbor complained about them to our landlord (who is a relative of our neighbor).  We were all really sad to see them go, as they had become part of our life here.  And they were giving us 6-7 fresh eggs per day.

We are thankful to God for the opportunity to have the chickens and are all agreed that we'd definitely like to keep them again in the future, if we have the opportunity.  Please see below for several pictures from our last day with our chickens.

Caitlin's First Birthday Party

Here are some photos from Caitlin's first birthday party.  We got a princess cake from a local Dairy Queen, and with some help from big brother and Daddy, blew out the candle.  Afterwards, we opened a box of gifts from Grandpa.

Joshua and Daddy Riding the Bicycle

Living in Phrabaht, Karl and Joshua have a morning tradition of riding the bicycle to the market to buy grilled pork and sticky rice for breakfast.  Off they go!

Dahlfred Kids' Inventions

Every six months, our mission organization holds a "Homeschool Week" for those families who are homeschooling to come together for some group activities and learning.  This past October, the theme for homeschool week and all the children had to present something that they had invented, or talk about an invention.  Our kids decided to put their thinking caps on and invent some things.  Mommy videoed the results, and Daddy edited it together into the video you see below.  The volume on some parts of the video is low, but you'll get the idea.  Enjoy.

Dear Friends & Family,

We hope you all had a good Easter, celebrating our Lord’s resurrection.  Here in Thailand, hot season is in full swing in Thailand as temperatures soar over 100 degrees each day.  The heat and humidity make us even more tired than usual, especially Sun.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

In our last prayer letter, we mentioned that Sun was feeling exhausted but we knew that this season would pass.  A perceptive reader read between the lines and wrote back, asking, “Is Sun....?” Yes, she is. We are pleased to let you know that Sun is pregnant with our third child, who should be making his or her appearance mid-September.  She is about 16 weeks along now, feeling tired, but not sick, and eating about every 2 hours.  It is hard to keep enough meals and munchies in the house!

Dear Friends & Family,

Some of you may wonder what Sun and the children do while Karl is away teaching at the seminary or helping to translate Christian material. Here is a small glimpse into our lives at home.Raising ChickensAnother missionary family was raising chickens and we thought we would also do that as part of our homeschooling experience. They were going to give us a hen and a Thai pastor was going to give us a couple of chicks. We were happily surprised when we received the hen AND a mother hen with her five 3-day old chickens. We had been building a hen house and preparing the place for months, so the children were ecstatic to finally get the chickens. The chicks have since grown quite big and are shedding their fuzzy feathers. They are starting to spar with each other. Caitlin really enjoys mothering the chickens. She wants to catch and hold the chicks whenever she has an opportunity. The kids also enjoy looking for eggs (we’ve got 4 so far!). Recently, it’s been unusually wet with the monsoon rains which flood our front yard, so the children haven’t been able to be with the chickens very much. We tried putting down some sand, and that helps some.

Our Kids Love Dressing Up

Our Kids Love Dressing Up

With Joshua at 6 years old, and Caitlin at 3 years old, the creative juices are running high.  Both of them love to imagine they are flying, jumping, shooting, or whatever and costumes are great for that.  Recently a missionary friend sent along some costumes for the kids in luggage that was coming this direction and the kids had a blast.  Here's a pic:

A Christmas Thank You Message

We are really thankful for all the people who love our kids and think of them on birthdays and Christmas.  Here's a short video of Joshua and Caitlin thanking their Uncle James for the gifts he sent for Christmas this year.  We're not sure if they were more impressed with the gifts or the packaging!

Joshua's Zipline Adventure

On recent trip to Colorado, we visited some friends who had built a zipline for their son in the backyard.  Joshua was hesitant to try it at first, but once he did, he couldn't get enough.  Here's a short video:

Dear Friends & Family,Our family has experienced a number of unsettling changes since our last prayer letter in September.  We had been planning to begin our home assignment in the U.S. this coming December but then we received an email from Karl’s brother.  Dad was in the hospital.  In just a little over a week, our family had packed out of our home in Thailand, said goodbyes, and were on a plane back to the U.S. to begin a year of home assignment - three months earlier than expected.  But Karl’s dad would not be there to greet us.We were in plenty of time for the funeral but even if we had jumped on a plane the second we heard he was in the hospital, we would not have gotten back in time to talk with him.  It is strange to think that just two years ago we made another unplanned trip to New Hampshire to be with Karl’s mom just before she died.

Sorry, I Don't Speak Thai

Sorry, I Don't Speak Thai

Joshua has lived in Thailand since he was 6 months old and we've tried to get him to speak Thai but so far, he has not caught on.  At 4 years old, he talks a mile per minute in English but only a couple phrases in Thai.  As we are planning to be in Thailand long term, this will probably correct itself later on, but for now, he had a hard time with Thai people speak to him.  Often, there are three stages that Joshua goes through:

1) Listen to the Thai person talking to him
