Perhaps my favorite Bible reading plan is the one put together by Robert Murray M'Cheyne. In one year, M'Cheyne's Bible reading calendar takes you through the Old Testament once, and the Psalms and New Testament twice. Each day has about four chapters of Scripture to read - usually two Old Testament readings, and then either two New Testament readings or a New Testament reading and a Psalm. It is a rigorous regiment to keep up with but I really enjoy keeping my mind in various parts of the Bible at the same time, and it is a great aid in not getting bogged down in books like Leviticus since there are other, perhaps more accessible, daily readings to go along with it.
At times I have succeeded in doing all the prescribed readings each day but many times I have done only part, either through busyness or laziness. And despite the fact that I have completed the whole reading plan twice, neither time did I finish in a year. The first time I did the M'Cheyne plan, it took me 15 months and the second time, it took me two and a half years. But the important thing is not to finish it by set date but to let the Word of God soak deeply into your soul and be transformed by it. In his introduction to the plan, M'Cheyne himself says, "We are such weak creatures that any regularly returning duty is apt to degenerate into a lifeless form. The tendency of reading the Word by a fixed rule may, in some minds, be to create this skeleton religion. This is to be the peculiar sin of the last days – “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” Guard against this. Let the calendar perish rather than this rust eat up your souls."
I have translated M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar into Thai which you can DOWNLOAD as a PDF. It is formatted to be printed out as a booklet on both sides of the page. Alternatively, you can also download it from Scribd. If you would like it as a Word document, email me and I can pass it on. I have been meaning to translate and include M'Cheyne's introductory comments to the calendar but have not had the time. If I get to that, I will include a link to the update on this page.
English copies of M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar may be obtained online from David Haslam's M'Cheyne page or from Ben Edgington's website. I would recommend the version with M'Cheyne comments and directions as they provide a good orientation, not only on how to use the calendar but also to the DANGERS and ADVANTAGES of using the calendar (in that order)
Aside from M'Cheyne's calendar, I would also highly recommend reading the biography of M'Cheyne, written by his friend Andrew Bonar. M'Cheyne was a godly 19th century Scottish pastor who had an intense devotion to God and to proclaiming His word. You can pick up a copy from either Amazon or the Banner of Truth Trust.
